چکیده
The objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate the genetic diversity of Navajo-Churro sheep using pedigree information; 2) examine the distribution of the Navajo-Churro population; and 3) evaluate the effect of breeder dynamics on genetic conservation of the breed. Pedigree data and breeder information (city and state) were obtained from the Navajo-Churro Sheep Breed Association. Inbreeding coefficients were calculated for each individual animal using pedigree information. A geographic information system program was used to divide the United States into four regions and overlay breeder locations, flock size, and flock inbreeding level. The small correlation between level of inbreeding and flock size (r = −0.07, P = 0.07) indicated that inbreeding levels are not different across flock

متن کاملGenetic Diversity and Molecular Phylogeny of Iranian Sheep Based on Cytochrome b Gene Sequences
Phylogenetic relationships and genetic variation between two Iranian sheep breeds were analyzed using cytochrome b (cyt-b) gene sequences. The genomic DNA was isolated by salting out method and amplified cytochrome b gene using polymerase chain reaction restriction (PCR) method with a pair of primer. A partial sequence of cyt-b gene of Iranian sheep is 780 bp and contained 13 variable sites and...
متن کاملGenetic structure and diversity among sheep breeds in the United States: identification of the major gene pools.
Understanding existing levels of genetic diversity of sheep breeds facilitates in situ and ex situ conservation activities. A comprehensive evaluation of US sheep breeds has not been previously performed; therefore, we evaluated the genetic diversity among and within 28 US sheep breeds. Both major and minor breeds were included in the analysis and consisted of 666 animals from 222 producers loc...
متن کاملExon 2 Ovar-DRB1 gene polymorphism in the Iranian Sangsari sheep
The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a central role in the control of disease resistance and immune response. Extensive genetic diversity in MHC genes provides a valuable source for genetic improvement, via selection, in many domestic animals. Exon 2 of the class II MHC, termed Ovar-DRB1 in domestic sheep (Ovis aries), has been suggested as important disease resistance and immune re...
متن کاملISSR Markers for Assessing DNA Polymorphism and Genetic Characterization of Cattle, Goat and Sheep Populations
Based on the purpose of conservation planning for native species, sixteen populations of cattle, goat andsheep were analyzed by amplification of genomic DNA using inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers toestimate of genetic structure. DNA samples of 275 animals were collected to Paccess their genetic content. The polymorphism information content (PIC) values and genetic di...
